The Six Major Books of Hadith :
1. Sahih Al-Bukhāri
2. Sahih Muslim
3. Sunan Abu Dā'ud
4. Sunan An-Nasā'i
5. Jami' At-Tirmidhi
6. Sunan Ibn Mājah
[ Reliability : ]
The most reliable Hadith is narrated by Bukhāri and Muslim .
Second is the Hadith narrated only by Bukhāri .
Third in reliability is narrated by Muslim alone .
Ahadith narrated by An-Nasā'i , At-Tirmidhi , Abu Dā'ud , Ibn Mājah and Muwatta of Imām Malik are graded thereafter in the line of reliability , and then comes the Ahadith mentioned in other books .
This established order of reliability should be followed where there is a contention .
[ Hadith Indicators : ]
As-Sab'a (the Seven) :
- stands for Ahmad , Al-Bukhāri , Muslim , Abu Dā'ud , An-Nasā'i , At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Mājah .
As-Sitta (the Six) :
- stands for the rest excluding Ahmad .
Al-Khamsa (the Five) :
- stands for the rest except Al-Bukāri and Muslim .
Al-Arba'a (the Four) :
- stands for Abu Dā'ud , An-Nasā'i , At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Mājah .
Ath-Thalātha (the Three) :
- stands for Abu Dā'ud , An-Nasā'i and At-Tirmidhi .
Al-Muttafaq 'alaih (the Agreed Upon) :
- stands for Al-Bukhāri and Muslim ; Ahadith accepted and agreed by both of them .

Marfu' : ( reaching back to the Prophet )
( attributed to the Prophet )
Mawqūf : ( saying of a companion )
Munqati' : ( broken chain )
Mawsūl : ( unbroken chain )
Mursal : ( missing link in the chain after the Tābi'i )
Tābi'i : ( student of a companion )
